However, due to the shortness of instrumental records and the scarcity of long-term temperature reconstructions, more high-quality temperature reconstructions are still needed to fully examine their spatial-temporal variability over the past several centuries. In this study, we built an earlywood width (EWW) chronology, a latewood width (LWW) chronology, and a tree-ring width (TRW) chronology using tree-ring samples of Pinus taiwanensis Hayata from the western Tianmu Mountains and the Xianyu Mountains in southeastern China. The tree growth-climate relationships were analyzed, and we found the strongest correlation between December and March mean temperature and the EWW chronology. The December-March mean temperature history was then reconstructed over the period of 1871-2016 using a linear regression model, which is the first EWW-based temperature reconstruction in southeastern China. With a higher explained variance (47.0%) than that (31.7%) of a previous reconstruction using a TRW chronology, the quality of the model has largely improved. This reconstruction was also comparable with other nearby records, further demonstrating the reliability of our new model. Furthermore, our reconstruction exhibits a significantly negative relationship with the East Asian winter monsoon index (EAWMI) since the 1920s, which may be attributed to the obviously enhanced EAWMI thereafter. #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: National Natural Science Foundation of China # Grant: 41671193 #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Key Research and Development Program of China # Grant: 2016YFA0600503 #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Natural Science Foundation of Jiangsu Province # Grant: BK20161394 #------------------ # Site_Information # Site_Name: Southeastern China # Location: Asia>Eastern Asia>China # Country: China # Northernmost_Latitude: 30.5 # Southernmost_Latitude: 30 # Easternmost_Longitude: 119 # Westernmost_Longitude: 117 # Elevation: #------------------ # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: Shi2021SEChinaTemp # Earliest_Year: 1871 # Most_Recent_Year: 2016 # Time_Unit: Year CE # Core_Length: # Notes: #------------------ # Species # Species_Name: Pinus taiwanensis # Common_Name: Taiwan pine # Tree_Species_Code: PITW #------------------ # Chronology_Information # Chronology: # #---------------- # Variables # # Data variables follow are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Data line variables format: one per line, shortname-tab-variable components (what, material, error, units, seasonality, data type,detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data, free text) # ## Year age, , , year Common Era, , tree ring;climate reconstructions, , ,N, ## Temp_recons air temperature, , , degree Celsius, Dec-Mar,tree ring; climate reconstructions,,,N, value for each year is average of the mean temperature from previous December to current year March ## Temp_obs air temperature, , , degree Celsius, Dec-Mar,instrumental,,,N,value for each year is average of the mean temperature from previous December to current year March # #---------------- # Data: # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing Values: # Year Temp_recons Temp_obs 1871 5.24457 1872 5.6839 1873 5.38374 1874 5.62114 1875 5.71119 1876 5.70573 1877 5.95131 1878 6.00043 1879 6.20781 1880 6.44248 1881 5.703 1882 6.16142 1883 6.01407 1884 6.09866 1885 5.36737 1886 5.61022 1887 5.93767 1888 5.93767 1889 5.79851 1890 5.21183 1891 5.65661 1892 5.94858 1893 5.9404 1894 5.76303 1895 6.28422 1896 6.68807 1897 6.00316 1898 5.73574 1899 6.67442 1900 6.72627 1901 6.87089 1902 6.45886 1903 7.56126 1904 7.20925 1905 5.79578 1906 5.63205 1907 5.92675 1908 5.63751 1909 5.46287 1910 5.53928 1911 5.71664 1912 5.98133 1913 6.07138 1914 5.87218 1915 5.79578 1916 5.43559 1917 5.9786 1918 5.50926 1919 5.81761 1920 5.65115 1921 5.75212 1922 5.67571 1923 5.96496 1924 5.68663 1925 6.05773 1926 6.39609 1927 5.80123 1928 6.64714 1929 6.18871 1930 4.84618 1931 4.91986 1932 5.16817 1933 5.08631 1934 5.2091 1935 5.90493 1936 5.50107 1937 5.65388 1938 4.4014 1939 4.61151 1940 5.49289 1941 6.35244 1942 6.85725 1943 6.34425 1944 5.86672 1945 4.60333 1946 5.29369 1947 5.91311 1948 6.9473 1949 5.9786 1950 5.91038 1951 5.04538 1952 5.32371 1953 4.7152 1954 5.08358 1955 4.48872 1956 5.51472 1957 5.89674 1958 5.67298 5.99615 1959 6.05773 6.38353 1960 6.3115 7.06826 1961 5.81215 5.36749 1962 6.1587 5.73475 1963 5.75212 5.42383 1964 5.30734 4.97440 1965 6.19417 6.01167 1966 6.36881 6.30879 1967 4.88711 4.91976 1968 4.64153 3.95368 1969 4.57058 4.99222 1970 4.69064 4.42082 1971 4.73158 5.27742 1972 4.82162 5.18573 1973 5.49289 6.59638 1974 5.45196 5.05387 1975 6.42338 6.13219 1976 5.28005 5.41451 1977 5.19819 4.98346 1978 4.61151 6.21966 1979 6.71808 6.91650 1980 6.25966 5.66063 1981 6.48069 5.95607 1982 7.25837 5.78860 1983 6.1778 5.59736 1984 5.23639 4.49429 1985 5.25003 4.85581 1986 4.99353 5.31322 1987 5.52563 6.72499 1988 4.72066 5.33849 1989 5.95677 6.13037 1990 6.19417 6.51530 1991 6.37699 6.05273 1992 6.49979 5.69136 1993 6.31423 6.18994 1994 5.47106 5.52258 1995 6.00316 6.51465 1996 5.05902 5.12106 1997 6.26239 6.59451 1998 5.41921 6.36183 1999 6.61439 7.30395 2000 5.84216 6.08045 2001 6.82178 7.33697 2002 6.90364 7.92879 2003 6.92001 6.37613 2004 7.66768 6.80047 2005 7.081 5.27432 2006 7.59946 6.32116 2007 7.34296 7.69293 2008 7.1847 6.12417 2009 6.55709 6.98203 2010 5.7794 6.43401 2011 4.94169 5.38009 2012 5.36464 5.11504 2013 5.81761 6.25289 2014 7.3375 6.72527 2015 6.96367 6.96450 2016 6.36608 6.86760
