This folder contains images and descriptive text from the NOAA Paleoclimatology Educational Slide Sets. Nine separate sub-folders contain 20-40 images, plus descriptive text files for each image. The images are presented in .jpg or .gif format, and also as .tiff scanner files of the original 35mm slides. The .tiff format files have been compressed using pkzip, and the resulting compressed files are also available here, and have the file name extension .zip. The accompanying text files describe each image, and collectively provide a description of some of the major proxy data types utilized in paleoclimatology, how the data are collected and analyzed, and summarize paleoclimate information which can be deduced from these proxy data. They can help answer questions such as: How can we learn about climate variability over the span of hundreds and thousands of years? What are paleoclimate proxy data and how are they collected? What techniques have scientists developed to study past climate variability when records from instruments are not available? How do tree rings, ice cores taken from ice caps, coral reefs and even the nests of packrats reveal important information about past climate patterns? The series of slidesets provide background on a variety of paleoclimatology subjects, including Ice Ages, Tree Rings, Ice Cores, Coral Reefs and much more. Each set of 20-40 slides includes vivid photographs of field research conducted around the globe, high-quality graphics of important datasets, and descriptive diagrams, making these sets ideal instructional aides. Unless otherwise noted, these materials are appropriate at the college level. Most NOAA photos and slides are in the public domain and CANNOT be copyrighted. No fee is charged for using the photos, and credit MUST be given to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Paleoclimatology Program/US Department of Commerce along with credit to the photographer or other source where given. To ensure that the scientific community continues to make valuable contributions to the NOAA Paleoclimatology Program's Website and Educational Slide Sets, we ask that you not use the slides from the slide sets for any commercial purposes without prior permission from the image contributors. Without the generosity and cooperation of many photographers working throughout NOAA, members of other government agencies, and private citizens who have given access to their collections, this site would not be possible.
