Once a site is chosen, the coring assembly is lowered over the edge of the ship. A steel barrel lined with a plastic 
core liner is driven into the mud of the ocean bottom. The barrel-- now filled with sediment--is next pulled out 
of the seafloor and raised to ship-board.
