Paleo Slide Set: Heinrich Events: Marine Record of Abrupt Climate Changes in the Late Pleistocene Cores being transported on the CSS Hudson. In the North Atlantic, scientists use data from sediment cores to understand climatic variations during and since the last ice age. In fact, it was in cores like these that the German paleoceanographer Hartmut Heinrich first noticed evidence of climatic variability in specific regions (Dreizack seamounts) of the Northeast Atlantic Ocean. In a subsequent evaluation of the prevalence of these events throughout the North Atlantic, Broecker et al (1992) defined these climatic fluctuations as Heinrich events, and also demonstrated that these events were not merely confined to local regions of the northeastern Atlantic.
