Hydroclimate reconstructions from tree-rings and lake sediments show close correspondence after accounting for seasonal- to centennial- scale temporal sensitivities. Carbonate d18O measurements from Castor and Round lakes reveal that the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) experienced wetter November-March conditions than the Little Ice Age (LIA). Charcoal records from Castor, Round, and nearby lakes show elevated fire activity during the LIA compared to the MCA. Increased multidecadal hydroclimate variability after 1250 CE is evident in proxy records throughout western North America. In the Upper Columbia River Basin, multidecadal wet periods during the LIA may have enhanced fuel loads that burned in subsequent dry periods. A notable decline in biomass burning occurred with Euro-American settlement in the late 19th century. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: # Grant: #--------------------------------------- # Site_Information # Site_Name: Round Lake # Location: Washington # Northernmost_Latitude: 48.61 # Southernmost_Latitude: 48.61 # Easternmost_Longitude: -119.12 # Westernmost_Longitude: -119.12 # Elevation_m: 654 #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: Round_Lake_char # First_Year: 1107 # Last_Year: -66 # Time_Unit: calendar year before present # Core_Length_m: 0.94 # Parameter_Keywords: physical properties, charcoal sediment # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: Radiocarbon # Chronology_Download_Resource: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/templates/noaa-wds-paleo-14c-terms.csv # Chronology_Download_Description: Radiocarbon terms and definitions. # Chronology_Notes: # Rejection_Rationale: # Reservoir_Method: # Calibration_Method: # Age_Model_Method: Bchron v. 4.7.6 # Missing_Values: NA # Chronology_Table: # lab_code depth_end_cm depth_start_cm material_dated age_14C_BP1950 age_14C_1s_yr date_type calib_curve age_calib_BP1950 age_calib_1s_yr date_used notes # Round A-18 Freeze 11-12 Cs137 11 12 bulk sediment NA NA 137Cs normal -13 5 yes 137Cs peak # UCIAMS #243792 45 47 charcoal 335 25 14C AMS intcal20 NA NA yes NA # UCIAMS #224755 55 57 charcoal 2730 25 14C AMS intcal20 NA NA no not included in final age model due to likely contamination # UCIAMS #243793 65 67 charcoal 915 20 14C AMS intcal20 NA NA yes NA # UCIAMS #224756 97 97.5 charcoal 1200 150 14C AMS intcal20 NA NA yes NA #--------------------------------------- # Variables # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Resource: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/paleo-search/skos/past-thesaurus.rdf # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Description: Paleoenvironmental Standard Terms (PaST) Thesaurus terms, definitions, and relationships in SKOS format. # # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-var components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, data type, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) # ## age_BP age,,,calendar year before present,,Paleolimnology; Fire History,,,N, ## char charcoal,,,count per square centimeter per year,,Paleolimnology; Fire History,,,N,charcoal accumulation rate #------------------------ # Data: # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing_Values: NA age_BP char -66 4.5 -63.5 5.666667 -61 8.5 -59 2 -56.5 14.33333 -54 21 -52 4 -49.5 1.333333 -47 7 -45 7.5 -42.5 7.333333 -40 14.5 -38 14 -35.5 10 -33 9 -31 43.5 -28.5 8.666667 -26 16.5 -23.5 13.33333 -21 5 -19 12 -16.5 6 -14 16.5 -11 1.5 -7 2.5 -3 3 1 3.5 5 2 8.5 4.666667 12 3.75 16 4.875 20 4.375 24 6.5 27.5 8.333333 31 4 35 4.5 39 5 43 5 46.5 7 50 4.75 54 3 58 4.5 62 5.25 65.5 7 69 2.5 73 5.75 77 4.25 80.5 4.666667 86.5 4.714286 92 7 96 6.875 100 3 103.5 7.666667 107 5.25 111 8.5 115 6.375 118.5 14.66667 122 5.875 126 4.125 132 4.5 137.5 9.666667 141 7.25 145 4.25 149 5 152.5 9.333333 156 6.5 163 3.125 170.5 2.714286 179 6.25 182.75 4.571429 186.25 6.142857 190 2.75 194 5.125 198 4.875 202 4.5 205.75 4.571429 209.25 7.142857 213 1.75 217 6.25 221 7 224.75 9.142857 228.25 4.142857 232 8.625 236 12.5 239.5 29.5 243 6.375 247 7.75 251 8.875 254.75 12.57143 258.25 14.57143 262 5.875 266 9.75 270 4.125 274 3.5 277.5 6.666667 281 3.375 285 6.25 289 17 292.5 7.333333 296 10.25 300 8.75 304 1.5 308 6.875 311.5 5.666667 315 6.75 319 5.875 322.5 7.833333 326 3.75 330 7.25 333.5 16 337 4.5 345 6.125 354.5 0.727273 367.5 6.857143 375 3.25 382.5 5.285714 390 2.625 397.5 3.142857 405 3.25 412.5 2 420 2 427.75 2.133333 435.25 3.866667 443 4.375 451.25 5.714286 458 4.5625 494 2.7 518.5 1.684211 537.5 1.447368 556.25 1.486486 572.75 1.294118 594 0.805556 612.25 4.297297 630 0.852941 648.5 0.888889 664.75 2.756757 683 1.388889 701 1.583333 717.5 2.1 734.5 2.117647 751.5 1.941176 768.75 1.314286 786.75 1.189189 804.5 1.205882 817.75 1.473684 837.75 0.72973 858.5 2.086957 879.5 1.289474 894.5 2.181818 917.25 0.657143 941 0.9 969.25 3.509434 1004.75 2.97561 1029.5 0.733333 1043 1.791667 1053.5 1.888889 1064.25 8.285714 1072.75 3.333333 1079.5 4.333333 1085.5 2.416667 1090.75 6.444444 1099.5 4.5 1107.25 4.666667
