We analyzed metal, carbon, nitrogen, and organic matter concentrations to document past mining pollution in sediment cores recovered from McCargoe Cove; a long, narrow inlet of Lake Superior on Isle Royale that receives drainage from a watershed that contains numerous ancient copper mines. At McCargoe Cove, concentrations of lead, copper, and potassium increase in the sediments after ad 1860 and between 6500 and 5400 years before ad 1950 (yr BP). Metal pollution increases at McCargoe Cove exceed natural (or background) levels and coincide with radiocarbon dates associated with copper artifacts and existing lead pollution reconstructions from lakes on the Keweenaw Peninsula. Interestingly, a coherent cessation of lead emissions at multiple study sites after ~5400 yr BP coincides with the onset of dry conditions found in regional paleoclimate proxy records. After ~5000 yr BP, lead concentrations on both Isle Royale and the Keweenaw Peninsula remain at background levels until the onset of modern lead pollution ~ad 1860. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Geological Society of America # Grant: Graduate Student Research Award #--------------------------------------- # Site Information # Site_Name: McCargoe Cove # Location: North America>United States Of America>Michigan # Country: United States Of America # Northernmost_Latitude: 48.0923 # Southernmost_Latitude: 48.0923 # Easternmost_Longitude: -88.7044 # Westernmost_Longitude: -88.7044 # Elevation: 182 #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: McCargoe2015loi # First_Year: 8678 # Last_Year: -57 # Time_Unit: cal yr BP # Core_Length: 2.75 # Notes: cores D12 and E12 #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: # # ID date type # C14_age conventional radiocarbon date, years before 1950AD # cal_BP radiometric age in calendar years before 1950AD # error one standard deviation error in years # depth core depth in cm # # thickness thickness of sample in cm # ID C14_age cal_BP error depth thickness # Pb-210 NaN -58 1 0.25 1 # Pb-210 NaN -53 1 2.25 1 # Pb-210 NaN -45 2 4.25 1 # Pb-210 NaN -37 2 6.25 1 # Pb-210 NaN -23 2 8.25 1 # Pb-210 NaN -5 3 10.25 1 # Pb-210 NaN 14 3 12.25 1 # Pb-210 NaN 42 5 14.25 1 # Pb-210 NaN 104 22 16.25 1 # radiocarbon 340 NaN 20 26.25 1 # radiocarbon 2160 NaN 20 133.5 1 # radiocarbon 3640 NaN 60 225.5 1 # radiocarbon 3745 NaN 20 237.5 1 # radiocarbon 7980 NaN 260 276.25 0.5 # radiocarbon 8020 NaN 220 276.75 0.5 # #--------------------------------------- # Variables # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname components (9 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) ## depth depth,,,centimeter,,paleolimnology,,,N,average depth of sample ## age age,,,calendar years before present,,paleolimnology,,,N,best age estimate in CLAM ## BD dry bulk density,,,g/cm^3,,paleolimnology,,,N, ## OM organic matter,,,dry weight %,,paleolimnology,,,N,LOI 550 C #------------------------ # Data # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing Value: depth age BD OM 0.75 -57.0 0.1425 21.4 5.25 -41.0 0.1771 20.2 10.75 -0.5 0.2405 17.5 15.25 73.0 0.3479 14.0 25.25 364.0 0.4072 11.5 29 439.8 0.3309 11.6 30.5 465.0 0.3986 12.6 33.5 515.3 0.4045 12.5 36.5 566.3 0.3690 13.4 39.5 616.3 0.2502 18.6 42.5 667.3 0.2251 17.3 45.5 718.0 0.2652 17.5 48.5 768.3 0.2693 18.0 51.5 819.3 0.2807 17.5 54.5 869.3 0.3031 16.1 57.5 920.3 0.3277 14.5 60.5 971.3 0.3387 14.0 63.5 1021.3 0.2622 11.3 66.5 1072.3 0.4712 10.9 69.5 1122.3 0.3326 13.6 72.5 1173.3 0.2688 16.1 75.5 1224.3 0.2667 16.3 78.5 1274.3 0.3381 16.4 81.5 1325.3 0.4163 12.7 84.5 1375.3 0.4748 11.1 87.5 1426.3 0.4265 12.9 90.5 1477.3 0.4003 13.5 93.5 1527.3 0.2554 15.3 96.5 1578.3 0.3682 12.3 99.5 1628.3 0.2075 14.8 102.5 1679.3 0.3314 13.6 105.5 1730.3 0.4437 12.1 108.5 1780.3 0.3532 14.1 111.5 1831.3 0.2942 12.1 114.5 1881.3 0.3029 12.5 117.5 1932.3 0.2747 13.1 118.5 1949.3 0.4424 10.4 121.5 2000.0 0.3996 11.1 124.5 2050.3 0.4112 10.1 127.5 2101.3 0.4600 8.7 130.5 2151.3 0.4121 10.4 133.5 2202.8 0.4067 11.3 136.5 2259.8 0.3047 12.1 139.5 2316.8 0.3662 11.9 142.5 2373.8 0.3949 11.3 145.5 2431.8 0.4199 11.1 148.5 2488.8 0.3805 11.9 151.5 2545.8 0.3077 11.7 154.5 2603.0 0.3999 12.1 157.5 2660.8 0.3803 11.7 160.5 2717.8 0.3929 11.7 163.5 2774.8 0.4377 11.1 166.5 2832.8 0.3492 11.6 169.5 2889.8 0.4568 11.0 172.5 2946.8 0.4817 11.6 175.5 3003.8 0.4560 10.0 178.5 3061.8 0.5091 9.9 181.5 3118.8 0.4794 10.9 184.5 3175.8 0.4505 10.0 187.5 3233.8 0.2949 10.8 190.5 3290.8 0.3985 9.2 193.5 3347.8 0.5267 10.7 196.5 3404.8 0.5186 9.2 199.5 3462.8 0.5440 8.8 202.5 3519.8 0.3549 10.1 205.5 3576.8 0.3498 9.9 208.5 3634.8 0.4948 8.9 211.5 3691.8 0.5485 8.7 214.5 3748.8 0.2167 10.2 220.5 3863.8 0.5143 10.1 223.5 3920.8 0.4683 8.5 226.5 3971.0 0.6238 7.5 229.5 4007.0 0.4382 12.3 232.5 4043.0 0.2685 11.7 235.5 4079.0 0.4834 10.8 238.5 4227.0 0.6979 3.6 241.5 4598.0 0.6632 5.1 244.5 4969.0 0.4432 5.0 247.5 5340.0 0.4916 5.2 250.5 5711.0 0.2529 6.7 253.5 6082.0 0.5643 4.1 256.5 6452.8 0.9805 3.1 259.5 6823.8 1.0376 2.4 262.5 7194.8 0.8675 2.6 265.5 7565.8 1.0832 2.1 268.5 7936.8 0.7923 2.8 271.5 8307.8 1.2556 2.4 274.5 8678.8 1.3338 2.0
