Here we develop and analyze a new lipid biomarker record from Horseshoe Lake (Illinois, USA) to evaluate the climatic conditions associated with hydroclimatic extremes that occurred in this region over the last 1,800 years. We present geochemical proxy evidence of temperature and moisture variability using branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs) and plant leaf wax hydrogen isotopic composition (d2Hwax), and use isotope-enabled coupled model simulations to diagnose the controls on these proxies. Our data show pronounced warming during the Medieval-era (AD 1000-1600) that corresponds to midcontinental mega-droughts. Severe floods on the upper Mississippi River basin also occurred during the Medieval-era, and correspond to periods of enhanced warm-season moisture. Our findings imply that projected increases in temperature and warm-season precipitation could enhance both drought and flood hazards in this economically vital region. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: National Science Foundation # Grant: EAR-1804107 #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration # Grant: NA18OAR4310427 #--------------------------------------- # Site_Information # Site_Name: Horseshoe Lake HORM12 # Location: Madison County, Illinois # Northernmost_Latitude: 38.704767 # Southernmost_Latitude: 38.704767 # Easternmost_Longitude: -90.081279 # Westernmost_Longitude: -90.081279 # Elevation: 122 #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: HORM12d2H # First_Year: 240 # Last_Year: 1989 # Time_Unit: AD # Core_Length: 4.29 # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: # # ID cal_age (yr BP) error depth (cm) thickness (cm) # SURFACE -62 1 0 # 210Pb-1 -54 3 1.5 # 210Pb-2 -13 31 6.5 # 210Pb-3 -2 5 10.5 # 210Pb-3 5 7 15.5 # 210Pb-4 16 10 20.5 # 210Pb-5 31 12 25.5 # 210Pb-6 53 14 30.5 # 210Pb-7 80 31 35.5 # AMBROSIA RISE 150 25 36 # UGAMS-13417 400 25 111.5 1 # UGAMS-13418 980 40 197.5 1 # UGAMS-14454 800 20 225 3 # UGAMS-13419 1220 25 254.5 1 # UGAMS-15039 990 25 256.5 1 # UGAMS-15040 990 25 285.5 1 # UGAMS-15041 1370 25 298.5 1 # DAMS-005563 1316 24 330 1 # UGAMS-13420 3560 30 347.5 1 # UGAMS-14455 1620 25 377.5 1 # UGAMS-14456 1650 20 389.5 1 # #--------------------------------------- # Variables # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname components (9 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) ## depth_cm depth,,,centimeter,,Paleolimnology,,,N, ## age_AD age,,,year Common Era,,Paleolimnology,,,N, ## C24-d2H delta 2H,C24 n-alkanoic acid,,per mil VSMOW,,Paleolimnology,,isotope ratio mass spectrometry,N, ## C26-d2H delta 2H,C26 n-alkanoic acid,,per mil VSMOW,,Paleolimnology,,isotope ratio mass spectrometry,N, ## C28-d2H delta 2H,C28 n-alkanoic acid,,per mil VSMOW,,Paleolimnology,,isotope ratio mass spectrometry,N, ## C24-d2H-1s delta 2H,C24 n-alkanoic acid,one standard deviation,per mil VSMOW,,Paleolimnology,,isotope ratio mass spectrometry,N, ## C26-d2H-1s delta 2H,C26 n-alkanoic acid,one standard deviation,per mil VSMOW,,Paleolimnology,,isotope ratio mass spectrometry,N, ## C28-d2H-1s delta 2H,C28 n-alkanoic acid,one standard deviation,per mil VSMOW,,Paleolimnology,,isotope ratio mass spectrometry,N, ## ACL average chain length,n-alkanoic acid,,dimensionless,,Paleolimnology,,isotope ratio mass spectrometry,N, #------------------------ # Data: # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing_Values: NaN depth_mm age_AD C24-d2H C26-d2H C28-d2H C24-d2H 1s C26-d2H 1s C28-d2H 1s ACL 5 1989 -133.7 -136.5 -125.8 1.3 0.9 0.8 NaN 13 1955 -133.1 -134.7 -124.9 6.6 0.1 0.8 27.3 19 1929 -140.9 -138.0 -129.0 0.9 1.4 1.9 27.2 29 1885 -135.0 -139.1 -128.1 0.8 0.4 1.0 27.5 43 1820 -143.3 -146.3 -138.4 3.2 0.0 0.6 27.5 49 1792 -141.3 -144.3 -140.8 0.1 0.2 0.4 27.2 54 1769 -148.6 -150.6 -140.6 1.3 1.7 3.1 27.5 69 1699 -155.6 -154.9 -155.0 1.8 0.6 0.2 27.2 82 1640 -145.2 -143.6 -149.2 0.9 6.8 0.7 27.5 88 1613 -159.0 -159.7 -153.4 2.3 1.6 2.3 27.3 95 1583 -152.1 -157.9 -156.9 5.8 1.1 0.6 27.8 109 1526 -151.8 -161.0 -147.4 1.1 0.8 0.6 27.2 120.5 1485 -150.3 -154.7 -137.7 1.1 2.1 1.4 27.7 121.5 1478 -161.2 -165.2 -146.8 4.8 1.2 1.3 27.0 159 1348 -155.8 -155.2 -152.5 0.3 1.3 1.1 27.3 161 1341 -141.9 -149.4 -144.6 1.9 1.0 0.5 27.7 181.5 1259 -162.4 -167.2 -157.8 0.4 1.5 0.1 28.0 227 1180 -144.2 -152.6 -147.3 0.1 0.0 1.3 27.6 229 1169 -147.8 -149.3 -146.5 1.2 0.0 0.2 27.2 235 1135 -161.0 -162.5 -157.9 1.3 1.8 1.0 27.2 251.5 1041 -158.5 -161.5 -158.3 0.1 2.3 0.6 27.3 252.5 1029 -162.5 -161.8 -158.1 0.9 2.4 0.5 27.5 259 994 -155.1 -155.3 -154.4 1.6 1.1 2.4 26.9 279 882 -160.1 -164.2 -164.8 1.8 2.1 1.6 27.5 303.5 747 -167.7 -166.2 -161.3 1.7 1.1 2.8 27.6 304.5 737 -164.0 -161.7 -158.6 0.4 1.0 0.4 27.5 316 689 -154.0 -157.2 -155.4 0.4 0.2 0.3 27.5 319 677 -165.1 -165.0 -151.9 0.8 0.4 1.5 27.2 339 600 -160.2 -164.6 -159.8 2.8 2.8 1.5 27.5 379 441 -180.6 -164.5 -147.3 1.0 2.9 2.3 27.3 402.5 348 -156.6 -163.3 -154.9 2.5 2.4 0.7 27.3 405 336 -153.1 -166.1 -154.6 0.1 0.3 1.7 27.2 407 328 -158.0 -164.7 -149.2 1.4 0.5 0.1 27.4 429 240 NaN NaN -165.9 NaN NaN 0.1 27.2
