The 65 m-deep stratified lake provides a detailed sediment record of climate and environmental change on the Tablelands. We reconstruct hydroclimate and vegetation change over the last ~18,000 years from a 7.2 m long sediment core at 20-year resolution using multiple paleoenvironmental proxies (µ-XRF elements, d13CTOC, TOC and C:N ratio). The data series are supported by a chronology based on 22 accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS) radiocarbon dates. The results suggest a distinct period of intense but highly seasonal rainfall coincident with the Antarctic Cold Reversal (14.7 – 13.0 cal ka BP). This period was followed by a trend into the early Holocene toward wetter, less seasonal conditions that allowed the progressive establishment of tropical forest in the catchment. The catchment was completely covered by closed forest by 7.3 cal ka BP. The inferred precipitation changes at Lake Barrine are consistent with other records on the Tablelands and in phase with the changes in tropical SE Africa, NW Australia and anti-phase with the East Asian summer monsoon region in the Holocene but not before that. This result supports previous conclusions that precipitation variations correlate (in phase or anti-phased) in these regions. This correlation results from a dynamic balance among intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Australian Biodiversity and Heritage # Grant: CE170100015 #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: National Natural Science Foundation of China # Grant: 41973072 #--------------------------------------- # Site_Information # Site_Name: Lake Barrine # Location: Australia # Northernmost_Latitude: -17.25 # Southernmost_Latitude: -17.25 # Easternmost_Longitude: 145.64 # Westernmost_Longitude: 145.64 # Elevation_m: 726 #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: Barrine_OChem # First_Year: 18358 # Last_Year: 1502 # Time_Unit: calendar year before present # Core_Length_m: 7.22 # Parameter_Keywords: geochemistry, carbon isotopes # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: # # Labcode depth_top depth_bottom mat.dated 14C.raw 14C.raw_err datemeth reservoir delta-R calib.14C calib.14C_2sig_lo calib.14C_2sig_up calib_method rejected notes # Wk-51082 14 15 Organic matter 1732 24 14C AMS NA 0 1579 1682 1526 SHCal20 NA # Wk-51083 56 57 Organic matter 2359 24 14C AMS NA 0 2178 2333 2144 SHCal20 NA # Wk-48847 60 61 Bulk sediment 2390 19 14C AMS NA 0 2213 2370 2165 SHCal20 NA # Wk-48848 147 148 Bulk sediment 2898 18 14C AMS NA 0 3057 3191 2943 SHCal20 NA # Wk-51073 5 6 Organic matter 1626 24 14C AMS NA 0 1459 1529 1376 SHCal20 NA # Wk-48849 43 44 Bulk sediment 1981 18 14C AMS NA 0 1907 1989 1839 SHCal20 NA # Wk-51078 48 49 Organic matter 2075 24 14C AMS NA 0 2000 2078 1927 SHCal20 NA # Wk-48850 163 164 Bulk sediment 3182 18 14C AMS NA 0 3280 3393 3165 SHCal20 NA # Wk-51076 289 290 Organic matter 4284 24 14C AMS NA 0 4953 5449 4731 SHCal20 NA # Wk-51079 221 222 Organic matter 3285 24 14C AMS NA 0 3820 3982 3693 SHCal20 NA # Wk-52727 228 230 Bulk Sediment 3678 14 14C AMS NA 0 3940 4072 3849 SHCal20 NA # Wk-48851 286 287 Bulk sediment 7118 19 14C AMS NA 0 4908 5382 4667 SHCal20 NA # Wk-48852 406 407 Bulk sediment 8808 20 14C AMS NA 0 9764 10068 9570 SHCal20 NA # Wk-51074 520 521 Charcoal 11583 34 14C AMS NA 0 13494 13641 13358 SHCal20 NA # Wk-51081 NA NA Wood 4235 24 14C AMS NA 0 NA NA NA SHCal20 YES These four dates without depths are from Core 4.
