Evidence from Lake El'gygytgyn, NE Arctic Russia, shows that 3.6-3.4 million years ago, summer temperatures were ~8C warmer than today when pCO2 was ~400 ppm. Multiproxy evidence suggests extreme warmth and polar amplification during the middle Pliocene, sudden stepped cooling events during the Pliocene-Pleistocene transition, and warmer than present Arctic summers until ~2.2 Ma, after the onset of Northern Hemispheric glaciation. Our data are consistent with sea-level records and other proxies indicating that Arctic cooling was insufficient to support large-scale ice sheets until the early Pleistocene. #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) # Grant: #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: US National Science Foundation (NSF) # Grant: #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) # Grant: #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) # Grant: #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ) # Grant: #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Russian Academy of Sciences Far East Branch (RAS FEB) # Grant: #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR) # Grant: #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research (BMWF) # Grant: #------------------ # Site_Information # Site_Name: Lake El'gygytgyn # Location: Europe>Eastern Europe>Russia # Country: Russia # Northernmost_Latitude: 67.4997 # Southernmost_Latitude: 67.4997 # Easternmost_Longitude: 172.1038 # Westernmost_Longitude: 172.1038 # Elevation: 492 m #------------------ # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: Elgygytgyn2013turb # Earliest_Year: 3572054 # Most_Recent_Year: 168917 # Time_Unit: cal yr BP # Core_Length: m # Notes: #------------------ # Chronology: # # # #---------------- # Variables # # Data variables follow (have no #) # Data line variables format: Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname-tab-longname components (9 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) # Turbidites in composite profile of ICDP site 5011-1 in Lake Elgygytgyn, NE Russia ## depth_top_m Depth top of sample interval, , , m, , , , ,N ## depth_bot_m Depth bottom of sample interval, , , m, , , , ,N #---------------- # Data: # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing Values: depth_top_m depth_top_m 7.504 7.579 8.242 8.697 9.36 9.462 10.09 10.417 13.611 13.758 14.304 14.424 16.991 17.101 17.804 17.856 20.103 20.22 21.313 21.466 22.05 22.158 22.483 22.538 23.433 23.497 24.35 24.48 25.02 25.212 26.407 26.483 27.179 27.276 28.186 28.271 30.126 30.476 30.73 30.79 31.219 31.297 32.508 33.002 33.32 33.392 33.525 33.602 35.934 36.024 37.142 37.459 40.216 40.417 41.848 41.955 42.724 42.919 44.621 44.781 44.849 44.912 45.482 45.572 45.606 45.719 46.437 46.509 46.696 46.76 47.967 48.017 52.989 53.2 53.637 53.889 53.968 54.11 55.366 55.412 57.128 57.193 57.425 57.886 58.205 58.338 59.321 59.382 62.624 63.067 63.198 63.254 63.364 63.449 63.589 63.645 64.145 64.422 64.607 64.678 65.555 65.803 66.945 67.01 67.348 67.55 68.386 68.479 70.762 71.157 71.578 71.895 74.77 74.939 75.158 75.346 75.744 76.08 76.935 77.01 77.226 77.581 78.165 78.608 79.873 79.98 80.287 80.352 80.582 80.653 81.422 81.475 81.762 81.853 83.427 83.496 84.105 84.195 84.626 84.814 85.187 88.531 89.746 90.52 91.037 91.187 92.68 92.767 93.376 93.442 94.298 94.504 95.143 95.78 99.718 99.787 100.404 100.486 101.275 101.482 102.418 102.53 102.934 103.084 103.472 103.575 107.737 107.787 108.462 108.512 112.259 112.365 113.412 113.681 115.876 115.897 116.558 116.627 119.064 119.177 119.459 119.551 119.646 119.83 122.04 122.157 122.853 122.954 124.151 124.359 126.382 126.433 126.745 126.793 127.393 127.487 127.686 128.122 128.819 129.037 130.271 130.331 131.115 131.185 132.332 132.382 132.635 132.755 133.533 133.837 135.908 135.985 136.491 136.543 136.612 136.811 137.211 137.306 138.585 138.641 141.504 141.636 141.812 142.216 143.213 143.435 160.429 160.524 160.688 160.8 167.079 167.127 169.023 169.163 169.241 169.852 172.052 172.131 173.135 173.252 185.569 185.652 185.735 185.763 186.62 186.885 186.945 186.99 191.513 191.755 192.496 192.667 192.847 192.931 192.943 192.965 193.805 193.943 196.225 196.373 198.319 198.776 200.485 200.556 207.383 207.539 207.704 207.804 208.445 208.646 209.103 209.214 210.384 210.594 222.023 222.694 247.501 247.858 247.864 248.289 255.121 255.245 257.172 257.548 263.199 263.251 270.236 270.291 270.379 270.45 270.549 270.626 272.597 272.678 279.542 279.815 280.246 280.307 280.332 280.705 280.993 281.942 283.471 283.671 283.677 283.792 284.142 284.607 285.055 285.685 288.353 288.914 292.387 292.47 293.579 293.63 295.198 295.53 295.543 295.607 295.738 295.854 295.884 295.939 296.059 296.228 296.815 297.312 298.407 298.724 298.728 298.906 298.931 299.727 299.737 299.801 305.796 305.89 306.116 306.244 306.339 306.661 306.727 307.511 307.947 308.016 308.335 308.391 309.169 309.776 310.157 310.404 310.871 310.95 311.049 311.099 311.152 311.495 312.912 313.326
