Eighteen of 26 trees were dated from this very open plot in a
grassy meadow with aspen.  Several of the largest stumps we found were
in this plot, estimated to be upwards of 1.5m in diameter with sapwood
and bark.  We also cored four of the largest aspen trees that fell within
plot boundaries, of which two could not be dated because of rot and the
others had pith dates in 1938 and 1910.  Two living ponderosa pine had
pith dates at 1872 and 1885, while the only other two living ponderosa
pine had pith dates in the late 1700s at 1778 and 1785.  Five trees had
pith dates from 1516 to 1530 and 3 more had pith in 1552.  Other pith
dates were in 1633, 1645, 1725 and 1740.  Fire dates were uniform and
many of the most common burned in the stand.
