Samples are put in weighed and numbered crucibles and # placed in an oven at 100 degrees C overnight to dry them out. Sample and crucible are # then weighed and returned to the oven to be heated at 550 decrees C for an hour. Samples # are cooled and weighed in the crucibles. This process is repeated one more time at # 1000 degrees C. Using the differences in sample weights, the mass lost during the # 550 degrees C treatment is organic mass, and the mass lost during the 1000 degrees C # heating is carbonate mass. The mass that is not burned off is clay, silica or other # non organic, non carbonate minerals. # # Location description: Situated inside Saginaw Lobe Moraine, near Flint MI, on private property # with gently rolling deciduous meadow, and is a lacustrine natural open # water glacial origin kettle lake.
