Samples are put in weighed and numbered crucibles and # placed in an oven at 100 degrees C overnight to dry them out. Sample and crucible are # then weighed and returned to the oven to be heated at 550 decrees C for an hour. Samples # are cooled and weighed in the crucibles. This process is repeated one more time at # 1000 degrees C. Using the differences in sample weights, the mass lost during the # 550 degrees C treatment is organic mass, and the mass lost during the 1000 degrees C # heating is carbonate mass.
