The frequency of extreme wildfire weather will increase with continued warming, but many uncertainties still exist about future fire regimes, including how the risk of large fires will persist as vegetation changes. Past fire-climate relationships provide an opportunity to constrain the related uncertainties, and reveal widespread burning across large regions of western North America during past warm intervals. Whether such episodes also burned large portions of individual landscapes has been difficult to determine, however, because uncertainties with the ages of past fires and limited spatial resolution often prohibit specific estimates of past area burned. Accounting for these challenges in a subalpine landscape in Colorado, we estimated century-scale fire synchroneity across 12 lakesediment charcoal records spanning the past 2,000 y. The percentage of sites burned only deviated from the historic range of variability during the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) between 1,200 and 850 y B.P., when temperatures were similar to recent decades. Between 1,130 and 1,030 y B.P., 83% (median estimate) of our sites burned when temperatures increased ~0.5 degrees C relative to the preceding centuries. Lake-based fire rotation during the MCA decreased to an estimated 120 y, representing a 260% higher rate of burning than during the period of dendroecological sampling (360 to -60 y B.P.). Increased burning, however, did not persist throughout the MCA. Burning declined abruptly before temperatures cooled, indicating possible fuel limitations to continued burning. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: National Science Foundation # Grant: BCS-0845129 #--------------------------------------- # Site Information # Site_Name: Lake Eileen # Location: Colorado # Country: United States of America # Northernmost_Latitude: 40.902 # Southernmost_Latitude: 40.902 # Easternmost_Longitude: -106.673 # Westernmost_Longitude: -106.673 # Elevation: 3135 #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: USELK001 CHAR # First_Year: 2686 # Last_Year: -62 # Time_Unit: cal yr BP # Core_Length: # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology: # Age model generated with the R package Bchron # Depth (cm) Lab Number Material Age (14C BP ) # 18 NaN Sediment surface # 33-34 UCIAMS-119936 Picea needle 145+/-20 # 49-50 UCIAMS-127559 Picea needle and charcoal 435+/-15 # 74-75 UCIAMS-138638 Wood and charcoal 1140+/-20 # 93-94 UCIAMS-119938 Picea needles and wood 1590+/-20 # 98-99 UCIAMS-138636 Picea seed and charcoal 1715+/-20 # 134-135 UCIAMS-119937 Picea needle, seed and wood 2540+/-20 # #--------------------------------------- # Variables # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname components (9 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) ## depth-cm-top depth,,,cm,,,top depth,,N ## depth-cm-bottom depth,,,cm,,,bottom depth,,N ## age-calBP-top age,,,calendar years BP,,Fire History,top of sample,,N ## age-calBP-bottom age,,,calendar years BP,,Fire History,top of sample,,N ## vol-wetsed volume,wet sediment,,ml,,Fire History,used for charcoal counts,,N ## char>125um charcoal,,,counts,,Fire History,>125um,,N #------------------------ # Data # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing Value: n/a depth-cm-top depth-cm-bottom age-calBP-top age-calBP-bottom vol-wetsed char>125um 18 19 -62 -44 1 3 19 20 -44 -27 1 9 20 21 -27 -11 1 5 21 22 -11 6 1 6 22 23 6 22 1 3 23 24 22 38 1 5 24 25 38 53 1 2 25 26 53 68 1 4 26 27 68 85 1 7 27 28 85 100.5 1 18 28 29 100.5 117 1 24 29 30 117 134 1 5 30 31 134 152 1 4 31 32 152 172 1 3 32 33 172 196 1 6 33 34 196 223 1 3 34 35 223 242 1 2 35 36 242 260 1 5 36 37 260 279 1 1 37 38 279 297 1 2 38 39 297 315 1 2 39 40 315 333 1 4 40 41 333 351 1 10 41 42 351 369 1 8 42 43 369 386 1 8 43 44 386 404 1 7 44 45 404 424 1 17 45 46 424 444 1 9 46 47 444 463 1 3 47 48 463 482.5 1 4 48 49 482.5 503 1 10 49 50 503 525 1 57 50 51 525 547 1 5 51 52 547 569 1 5 52 53 569 589 1 5 53 54 589 611 1 5 54 55 611 631 1 6 55 56 631 652 1 2 56 57 652 672 1 6 57 58 672 694 1 10 58 59 694 713.5 1 16 59 60 713.5 734 1 7 60 61 734 754 1 5 61 62 754 774 1 8 62 63 774 793 1 3 63 64 793 813.5 1 7 64 65 813.5 834 1 14 65 66 834 855 1 9 66 67 855 875 1 19 67 68 875 895 1 3 68 69 895 916 1 16 69 70 916 937 1 4 70 71 937 958 1 8 71 72 958 978 1 5 72 73 978 999 1 10 73 74 999 1027.5 1 12 74 75 1027.5 1062 1 26 75 76 1062 1084 1 17 76 77 1084 1105 1 17 77 78 1105 1127 1 24 78 79 1127 1149 1 20 79 80 1149 1172 1 6 80 81 1172 1194 1 21 81 82 1194 1215 1 34 82 83 1215 1236 1 9 83 84 1236 1259 1 8 84 85 1259 1282 1 9 85 86 1282 1302 1 19 86 87 1302 1324 1 20 87 88 1324 1346 1 19 88 89 1346 1368 1 14 89 90 1368 1389 1 10 90 91 1389 1412 1 7 91 92 1412 1435 1 10 92 93 1435 1467 1 7 93 94 1467 1504 1 10 94 95 1504 1532 1 8 95 96 1532 1559 1 22 96 97 1559 1584 1 10 97 98 1584 1617 1 17 98 99 1617 1662 1 20 99 100 1662 1695 1 15 100 101 1695 1719 1 13 101 102 1719 1745 1 14 102 103 1745 1773 1 15 103 104 1773 1800 1 7 104 105 1800 1830 1 11 105 106 1830 1857 1 13 106 107 1857 1885 1 12 107 108 1885 1913 1 17 108 109 1913 1941 1 15 109 110 1941 1968 1 16 110 111 1968 1996 1 12 111 112 1996 2024 1 7 112 113 2024 2053 1 9 113 114 2053 2079.5 1 7 114 115 2079.5 2106 1 5 115 116 2106 2134 1 21 116 117 2134 2162 1 19 117 118 2162 2186 1 5 118 119 2186 2212 1 10 119 120 2212 2238 1 3 120 121 2238 2263 1 14 121 122 2263 2292 1 34 122 123 2292 2320 1 21 123 124 2320 2347 1 6 124 125 2347 2374 1 6 125 126 2374 2402 1 11 126 127 2402 2427 1 4 127 128 2427 2457 1 5 128 129 2457 2482 1 11 129 130 2482 2506 1 27 130 131 2506 2532 1 23 131 132 2532 2564 1 5 132 133 2564 2606 1 18 133 134 2606 2686 1 13
