Here we report the effects of the 1998 bleaching event on coral calcification as well as the composition of the calcifying fluid (cf) from which corals precipitate their calcium carbonate skeletons. This was investigated by using the Sr/Ca, Li/Mg (temperature), and boron isotopes (d11B) and B/Ca (carbonate chemistry) proxies in a Porites sp. coral. Following the summer of 1998 the coral exhibited a prolonged period (~18 months) of reduced calcification (~60%) and a breakdown in the seasonality of the geochemical proxies. However, the maintenance of elevated dissolved inorganic carbon (DICcf; >×2 seawater) and pHcf (>8.3 compared to seawater ~8.0) even during severe stress of 1998 indicate that a minimum threshold of high aragonite saturation state (Ocf) of ~14 (~×4 seawater), is an essential pre-requisite for coral calcification. However, despite maintaining elevated levels of Ocf even under severe stress, coral growth is still impaired. We attribute this to reductions in either the effective active volume of calcification and/or DICcf as bleaching compromises the photosynthetically fixed carbon pool available to the coral. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Australian Research Council # Grant: FL120100049 #--------------------------------------- # Site Information # Site_Name: Havannah Island HAV09_3 # Location: Great Barrier Reef # Country: Australia # Northernmost_Latitude: -18.836043 # Southernmost_Latitude: -18.836043 # Easternmost_Longitude: 146.525887 # Westernmost_Longitude: 146.525887 # Elevation: -4 #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: HAV09_3 path-C D'Olivo2017 # First_Year: 1997 # Last_Year: 2001 # Time_Unit: AD # Core_Length: # Notes: Data was collected along fourth different sample paths. #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: #--------------------------------------- # Variables # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab- 10 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data,additional info ## age_CE age,,,years CE,,,,,, ## LinExt extension rate,Porites sp.,,cm/yr,,corals and sclerosponges,interpolated,elemental analysis,N,interpolated linearly to bimonthly time steps ## Mg/Ca magnesium/calcium,Porites sp.,,mol/mol,,corals and sclerosponges,interpolated,inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry,N,interpolated linearly to bimonthly time steps ## Sr/Ca strontium/calcium,Porites sp.,,mol/mol,,corals and sclerosponges,interpolated,inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry,N,interpolated linearly to bimonthly time steps ## U/Ca uranium/calcium,Porites sp.,,umol/mol,,corals and sclerosponges,interpolated,inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry,N,interpolated linearly to bimonthly time steps ## Li/Mg lithium/magnesium,Porites sp.,,mol/mol,,corals and sclerosponges,interpolated,inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry,N,interpolated linearly to bimonthly time steps ## B/Ca boron/calcium,Porites sp.,,mol/mol,,corals and sclerosponges,interpolated,inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry,N,interpolated linearly to bimonthly time steps ## Li/Ca lithium/calcium,Porites sp.,,umol/mol,,corals and sclerosponges,interpolated,inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry,N,interpolated linearly to bimonthly time steps ## d11B delta 11B,Porites sp.,,per mil SRM 951,,corals and sclerosponges,interpolated,inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry,N,interpolated linearly to bimonthly time steps #------------------------ # Data # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing Value: -999 age_CE LinExt Mg/Ca Sr/Ca U/Ca Li/Mg B/Ca Li/Ca d11B 1997.50 1.5497 4.244487 9.150175 1.189702 1.588634495 477.81414 6.7282506 24.06092303 1997.67 0.9515 4.068352 9.177878 1.209704 1.57927826 476.9122 6.4185477 24.72604571 1997.83 0.7424 4.338561 9.088484 1.171071 1.420704564 446.35258 6.1596495 24.24420827 1998.00 0.5641 4.40929 9.059637 1.165835 1.379619717 436.63373 6.0829053 23.94154365 1998.17 0.4174 4.425164 9.066622 1.16072 1.360553511 450.19913 6.0208051 24.53142828 1998.33 0.4527 4.46887 9.02279 1.140324 1.357741825 461.38975 6.0670778 24.83583252 1998.50 0.4805 4.507052 9.014047 1.132943 1.340487994 463.97442 6.0414208 25.06097108 1998.67 0.4699 4.507041 8.998161 1.126251 1.327884979 468.32539 5.984772 25.43253598 1998.83 0.4837 4.597052 8.960605 1.100788 1.307044604 471.54046 6.0058119 25.48462157 1999.00 0.7701 4.802047 8.906609 1.058009 1.252606542 459.06462 6.0147432 25.13878081 1999.17 0.8941 4.949957 8.896154 1.031407 1.237052734 445.57845 6.1230789 24.79425669 1999.33 1.2657 4.834888 8.973257 1.066043 1.304885229 461.86318 6.3023842 24.94764754 1999.50 0.9456 4.419921 9.095637 1.141079 1.49411836 499.44601 6.5971308 25.33493282 1999.67 1.0278 4.337367 9.093618 1.160643 1.517085386 503.08775 6.5798738 25.16556382 1999.83 0.749 4.512132 9.025434 1.12444 1.414597866 477.06398 6.374605 24.7897872 2000.00 0.8166 4.792967 8.92518 1.062038 1.303371708 443.07419 6.2451902 24.35902208 2000.17 0.9203 4.905185 8.908391 1.048393 1.278255642 433.9038 6.2700272 23.9369622 2000.33 1.5783 4.791868 8.98271 1.075523 1.325680015 436.86763 6.3459525 23.87302042 2000.50 1.1041 4.292676 9.138679 1.170394 1.553772825 486.16815 6.6635703 24.34354679 2000.67 1.2295 4.210182 9.15578 1.188212 1.587897925 498.09415 6.6837606 24.68643134 2000.83 1.1693 4.533335 9.005781 1.118224 1.420684025 456.51944 6.4285225 23.92445973 2001.00 -999 4.839801 8.911446 1.075525 1.301069014 417.72987 6.2958192 23.47717863
