Ba/Ca ratio and oxygen isotope composition of planktonic foraminifera in a marine sediment core from the Gulf of Guinea, in the eastern equatorial Atlantic (EEA), reveal centennial- scale variations of riverine freshwater input that are synchronous with northern high-latitude stadials and interstadials of the penultimate interglacial and the last deglaciation. EEA Mg/Ca-based sea surface temperatures (SSTs) were decoupled from northern high- latitude millennial-scale fluctuation and primarily responded to changes in atmospheric greenhouse gases and low-latitude solar insolation. The onset of enhanced monsoon precipitation lags behind the changes in EEA SSTs by up to 7000 years during glacial-interglacial transitions. This study demonstrates that the stadial-interstadial and deglacial climate instability of the northern high latitudes exerts dominant control on the West African monsoon dynamics through an atmospheric linkage. DESCRIPTION: A continuous marine sedimentary record of eastern equatorial Atlantic thermal and West African monsoon evolution over the past 155,000 years. Mg/Ca, Ba/Ca and d18O were measured on Globigerinoides ruber (variety pink) with shell size 250-300 micron. The age model for the MD03-2707 record was developed using 24 14C-AMS datings measured at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (Livermore, USA) and at the Leibniz-Laboratorium fur Altersbestimmung und Isotopenforschung, Universitat Kiel (Kiel, Germany). 14C ages are converted to calendar age using the software Calib version 5.0.1 assuming a reservoir age of 400 years. For 14C-dates beyond the calibration range of the Calib software, we use the online software Fairbanks0805 calibration curve. The final age model for the 14C dated interval is based on two polynomial fits. For the age interval between 54,850 and 120,300 years BP, the age model is developed by alignment of planktonic foraminiferal d18O in MD03-2707 with the de18O of NGRIP ice core. For ages older than 119,500 yr BP, the age model is developed by aligning benthic foraminiferal d18O in MD03-2707 with the d18O of the stack record LR04 (Lisiecki and Raymo (2005).
