Although a slowdown of AMOC results in an atmospheric-induced surface cooling in the entire TNA, the subsurface experiences an even larger warming because of rapid reorganizations of ocean circulation patterns at intermediate water depths. Here, we reconstruct high-resolution temperature records using oxygen isotope values and Mg/Ca ratios in both surface- and subthermocline-dwelling planktonic foraminifera from a sediment core located in the TNA over the last 22 ky. Our results show significant changes in the vertical thermal gradient of the upper water column, with the warmest subsurface temperatures of the last deglacial transition corresponding to the onset of the Younger Dryas. Furthermore, we present new analyses of a climate model simulation forced with freshwater discharge into the North Atlantic under Last Glacial Maximum forcings and boundary conditions that reveal a maximum subsurface warming in the vicinity of the core site and a vertical thermal gradient change at the onset of AMOC weakening, consistent with the reconstructed record. Together, our proxy reconstructions and modeling results provide convincing evidence for a subsurface oceanic teleconnection linking high-latitude North Atlantic climate to the tropical Atlantic during periods of reduced AMOC across the last deglacial transition. #-------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: US National Science Foundation # Grant_Number: OCE-1102743 #-------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: National Science Foundation of China # Grant_Number: 41028005, 40921004, 40930844 #-------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: US NOAA # Grant_Number: NA11OAR4310154 #-------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Chinese Ministry of Education # Grant_Number: 111 project Grant B07036 #-------------------- # Site_Information # Site_Name: VM12-107 # Location: Caribbean Sea # Northernmost_Latitude: 11.33 # Southernmost_Latitude: 11.33 # Easternmost_Longitude: -66.63 # Westernmost_Longitude: -66.63 # Elevation: -1079 #-------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: VM12-107Schmidt2012crass # First_Year: 22000 # Last_Year: 0 # Time_Unit: cal yr BP # Core_Length: 2.705 # Parameter_Keywords: oxygen isotopes # Notes: #-------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: # # Depth (cm) 14C Age Age Error(yr) Calendar Age (ky BP) Calendar Age Error (-) Calendar Age Error (+) (ky) # 2.5 1140 35 0.69 0.05 0.07 # 70.5 7900 55 8.37 0.13 0.13 # 82.5 9380 40 10.22 0.07 0.12 # 90.5 10050 65 11.05 0.26 0.14 # 104.5 10400 50 11.46 0.22 0.23 # 130.5 11200 50 12.67 0.1 0.16 # 160.5 12750 50 14.37 0.35 0.52 # 180.5 13450 60 15.74 0.56 0.64 # 220.5 15600 60 18.47 0.42 0.18 # 270.5 18500 90 21.59 0.26 0.47 # # Radiocarbon dates from VM12-107 based on mixed samples of G. sacculifer and G. ruber specimens. # Radiocarbon ages were converted to calendar ages using CALIB 6.0 using the standard 400 year reservoir age correction. # #------------------ # Variables # # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Resource: https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/paleo/skos/past-thesaurus.rdf # PaST_Thesaurus_Download_Description: Paleoenvironmental Standard Terms (PaST) Thesaurus terms, definitions, and relationships in SKOS format. # # variables format: shortname what,material,error,units,seasonality,data_type,detail,method, C(har) or N(umeric) data,additional information # ##
