GEOGRAPHIC REGION: Pacific Ocean, Baja California continental margin PERIOD OF RECORD: 0 to 52 ka FUNDING SOURCES: US Geological Survey, US National Science Foundation DESCRIPTION: During October and November, 1999, a total of 55 gravity cores and 16 piston cores (up to 16 m in length) were collected from the R/V Melville (cruise MV99) from within the oxygen-minimum zone (OMZ) on the margin of southern Alta California to the southern tip of Baja California in search for laminated Holocene sediments (van Geen et al., 2001). Laminated Holocene sediments were not recovered north of about 24° N but were recovered south of that latitude. Piston cores revealed that sediments deposited during the time equivalent to marine oxygen isotope stage 3 (OIS3) also were laminated (van Geen et al., 2003; Dean et al., 2006). Nine of those southern Baja California cores from depths of 400-700 m were sampled for measurements of concentrations of organic carbon (OC), calcium carbonate (CaCO3), and major and trace elements at a temporal resolution of ~0.5 kyr over the past 52 kyr. Alternating laminated and bioturbated intervals in sediment cores from the open margin (GC13, GC18, GC31, GC32, PC05, PC08, and PC10) and from a semi-enclosed basin (GC48 and PC14) show that the intensity of the OMZ has been delicately poised with respect to variations in ventilation and/or productivity changes in the North Pacific, presumably driven by fluctuations in climate. The dark-colored, laminated, fine-grained sediments are rich in OC with concentrations of up to 17 weight percent. The laminated Holocene and OIS3 sediments also contain elevated concentrations of redox-sensitive trace elements. Concentrations of OC and cadmium (Cd) were used as proxies for organic productivity, and concentrations of molybdenum (Mo) and the presence of laminated sediments were used as proxies for bottom-water anoxia (Dean et al., 2006). The data set includes data files in ASCII or Excel format with descriptive documentation, and pdf files of visual core descriptions for each 1.5-m section of the nine cores. GEOCHEMICAL METHODS Carbon Analyses Total carbon (TC) and inorganic carbon (IC) were determined by coulometry (Engleman and others, 1985). Values of organic carbon (OC) were determined by difference between TC and IC. Percent CaCO3 was calculated by dividing percent inorganic carbon by 0.12, which is the fraction of carbon in CaCO3. Inorganic Geochemical Analyses For inorganic geochemical analysis, splits of powdered samples used for carbon analyses were analyzed for major, minor, and trace elements by induction-coupled, argon-plasma emission spectrometry (ICP; Briggs, 2002.
