This survey is designed to measure your level of satisfaction with the NCEI website. It consists of nine questions and should take approximately two to five minutes to complete. Please do not use this survey to provide comments on or responses to rules, notices, solicitations or other official agency actions. Any information you provide will be used to for the sole purpose of improving NOAA's digital products and services.
Background: NOAA collects and uses active acoustic (sonar) data for various mapping requirements, focusing on the area from near the ocean surface to the seafloor. Primary uses of these sonar data include mapping of fish schools and other mid-water marine organisms, assessing biological abundance, identifying species, and characterizing habitat. Additionally, it is used to map underwater gas seeps and remotely monitor undersea oil spills.
The Archive was established in collaboration with NOAA Fisheries and the University of Colorado in 2014. This archive preserves sonar data collected by NOAA line offices, academia, industry, and international institutions, offering free, global access to over 300+ terabytes of data. Centralized access to this breadth of data supports NOAA and the scientific community as a whole by facilitating exploration of the data beyond their original collection purpose.
Information on the archive is available on the NCEI Water Column Sonar Data Archive page. Please contact wcd.info@noaa.gov with any questions.
Data Providers: NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research (OER), NOAA National Ocean Service (NOS), Rolling Deck to Repository (R2R), U.S. academic or private institutions (Other Sources), and international groups (Non-U.S.).

By default, water column sonar datasets are color-coded on the map by Source Group (see the legend for more info). In addition, datasets can be visualized as a "heat map" by opening the layer list and choosing the Heatmap: Water Column Sonar Datasets option. For this visualization, datasets are displayed with a single color and a "glow" is added whenever they overlap. Areas with greater overlapping have more "glow".
