Background: Passive acoustic monitoring is a powerful observational tool that NOAA uses to detect and characterize sounds produced by fish and marine mammals, ambient noise from physical oceanographic processes, and anthropogenic noise sources that contribute to the overall ocean noise environment. In collaboration with NOAA, other federal agencies, and academic partners, NCEI established the Passive Acoustic Data Archive to support the stewardship and dissemination of these valuable data. This map viewer provides public discovery, search, and access to NCEI's rapidly growing archive of audio files and data products.
Additional information on the archive is available on the NCEI Passive Acoustic Data Archive page. Check out the NCEI Passive Acoustic Story Map to learn more about passive acoustic data and one of the monitoring efforts archived at NCEI.
If you have any questions, please contact pad.info@noaa.gov.
Map Viewer User Guides (PDF): These guides are designed to assist you in navigating the map effectively by providing step-by-step instructions, helpful tips, and guidance on appropriate re-use of archived datasets.
Data Contributions and Citations: The archive represents a compilation of audio data and data products collected by numerous partners and projects, supported by a variety of funding agencies.
When using or referencing the archive collection, please cite as: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information. 2017. Passive Acoustic Data Collection. NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information. https://doi.org/1025921/PF0H-SQ72. [Access date].
When using or referencing specific datasets, please see the citation information listed in the metadata for each dataset. Project-specific citations are also available within each project's ReadMe file in the archive's GCP bucket.
