The Earth Observations Group (EOG) at NOAA/NCEI is producing daily mosaic images and monthly composites using nighttime data from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Day/Night Band (DNB). VIIRS DNB sensors are on the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) satellite and on the NOAA-20 satellite. The imagery in this service is compiled from Suomi NPP data. More information about VIIRS DNB Nighttime Lights data at NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI).

This map provides access to nightly mosaics and monthly composites of VIIRS DNB low light imaging data: detections of lighting from cities, towns, villages, combustion sources and lit fishing boats.

Under Controls, select between nightly mosaics and monthly composites using the "Select Imagery" input. Use the time slider to select the imagery date. The map can be swtiched between a 2D Map view and a 3D Globe view. Change the transparency of the imagery with the opacity slider. Toggle the boundaries/labels on/off using the checkbox. Click on the map to retrieve the radiance value (nanowatts/cm²/sr), or number of cloud-free observations at that location.

The nightly image service will contain approximately the past 60 days worth of imagery, with new imagery being added each day, and the older images being removed. The current image is updated multiple times per day as data from new orbits arrive.

There are two versions of the monthly imagery: the first excludes any data impacted by stray light; the second includes these data if the radiance vales have undergone a stray-light correction procedure. For each month, images displaying the number of cloud-free observations are also provided.
