RELEASE OF SHIPS OF OPPORTUNITY XBT DATA
Background
The Maritime Environment Information Centre at the UKHO has a continuing policy to populate its oceanographic databases from all available sources. One of these sources is the Ships Of Opportunity Programme and other available vessels. There is an ongoing programme to supply XBT probes to predominately research vessels operated by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). The data collected has served to enhance the Historical Oceanographic Observation Database (HOOD) at the UKHO and aid the NERC scientists in their research.
Data Issue
The data on this CD-ROM represents 5 years (1995 - 2000) of archived SOOP XBT observations. The CD-ROM contains 7214 observations from various vessels (see vessel summary), the data ranges from years 1984 to 2000. Previously to 1995 the data was released annually to the oceanographic community through ICES and US NODC, World Data Centre A.
